Advantages of Composite Materials for Your Backyard Deck

Tim • Jan 28, 2022

Your deck is an investment, a showpiece and place to enjoy time with friends and family. If you are looking for maximum durability then look no further. Composite materials are the premium deck building material.

Why a composite deck?

When we build our Durham Region decks there are really only 2 options when it comes to materials. Traditional wood or composite materials. If you are here, you are probably wondering which one is best for you. We believe that composite decks are the best. Most people choose traditional wood because it is a lot cheaper up front. Composite is a bit more than double the price per square foot. That being said, in the long run you are going to save a lot of time and money in maintenance. They can also stand up to the abuse of our Durham Region winters, because the materials do not break down, year after year your deck will look amazing.

The pros:

They are cheaper — If you are planning to move in the next few years, composite might not be for you. If you are thinking long term, we highly recommend getting a composite deck because you will not have to get your deck repainted or repaired as traditional wood breaks down and fades.

No more splinters — Finally, you can enjoy your new deck to the fullest. Composite decks do not chip so you can enjoy walking on it barefoot and not worry about getting splinters from chipping wood.

No more maintenance — Now you can just relax, no more repainting or fading. Since composite decks have great warranty on fading you can just enjoy your deck instead of working hard to make it look great.

Hidden hardware — Using a smart channel system, composite decks are installed with hidden hardware. This creates a super clean look that cannot be achieved with traditional wood.

Cleaning — If it does get some buildup on it, it is easy to power wash it clean again.

The cons:

Initial Price — Composite decks cost a lot more in the initial price.

Maintenance — If you need to access a board in the middle of the deck it can be difficult to get to it because of the way the hardware is designed.

Installation — The installation process is more time consuming for composite decks.

When designing a deck, an often overlooked part is functionality. Having a deck that looks great is good and all but a deck that utilizes every square foot is equally important.
